About this chess clock
Two clocks, one running at a time. Tap your side when you have moved and your opponent's clock starts. Set a base time and an increment, and it handles the rest — including calling the flag.
Time controls
- Bullet: 1 minute each, sometimes with a 1 second increment.
- Blitz: 3 or 5 minutes each, often with a 2 second increment.
- Rapid: 10 or 15 minutes each, with a 10 second increment.
- Classical: 30 minutes or more each.
What is an increment?
Time added to your clock every time you move. A 3+2 game gives each player three minutes plus two seconds a move, which stops a won position being lost purely on the clock.
Can I use it for other games?
Yes — anything two-player and turn-based. Go, Scrabble and backgammon all use the same kind of clock.
What happens when time runs out?
The clock stops and shows which side flagged. Under normal rules that player loses, unless the opponent has no way to deliver mate.
