About military time
Military time is the 24-hour clock written without a colon: 1430 rather than 2:30 PM. It runs from 0000 at midnight to 2359, so no time is ever ambiguous and AM and PM are not needed.
The rules
- Before noon the digits match the standard time: 0900 is 9:00 AM.
- After noon, add 12 to the hour: 2:30 PM becomes 1430.
- Midnight is 0000, and the minute before it is 2359.
- Noon is 1200.
How do you say military time out loud?
Digit groups, not a clock time: 1430 is "fourteen thirty", 0900 is "zero nine hundred", 0000 is "zero hundred". Hours on the hour end in "hundred".
Is midnight 0000 or 2400?
Both are used. 0000 is the start of the day and is what you will see almost everywhere; 2400 is occasionally used to mean the end of a day, which is the same instant a moment later.
Is military time the same as the 24-hour clock?
Nearly. The 24-hour clock keeps the colon and leading zero as 14:30; military time drops the colon and writes 1430. The times themselves are identical.
